A Complete Guide to Aquarium Fishing
By editor | June 21, 2008

Keeping a school of healthy fish is an easy task if you know the right way to maintain an aquarium. Just ensure you follow these guidelines to provide a healthy and conducive environment for your marine friends. There are things that should be done daily to care for fish and some things that need only be done weekly or bi-weekly. The everyday requirements for the care of your fish are not much. You will need to look at the fish every day to make sure they appear to be overall healthy and happy. Fish respond negatively to stress and constant prolonged exposure over a period of time can make them unhappy and sick. Check out the filter and lights regularly and be sure they function at tip-top conditions. Do not forget to give your fish their food everyday. Make it a point not to feed your fish anything that they cannot consume in 2-5 minutes. Excess food that is not consumed will sink to the bottom and become debris, adding to the nitrate levels and rising the toxicity of the water. Observe the pH and temperature of water once a week to make sure it is alright. Any necessary adjustment should be made promptly. The people at the pet store where you buy your fish from will be only too happy to tell you what levels you must ideally maintain. The conditions are different for each kind of fish.
You cannot avoid the important aspect of cleaning the filter. The filters used in the aquarium will collect the excretory produces of the fish that would otherwise pollute the tank. Since the filters will get accumulated with debris over time, they will not be able to filter properly if you don’t clean them. Filters can also work for circulating oxygen within the fish tank apart from collecting and eliminating debris. You will find that the cycling of gases within the tank will become reduced in speed if the filters are clogged. Due to this, the available oxygen in the tank can go down. If you do not correct this, your fish may die. You have to assess the need of the aquarium and accordingly change the filter once every couple of weeks. If the water becomes opaque and emanates an undesirable odor, it’s time to change the filter. The kind of filter you are using will decide whether you need to simply clean the filter with water or to replace it entirely.
Go slow when you are changing water in your aquarium. Before cleaning your aquarium, make sure to unplug all lights and other fixtures. Every week or two weeks, change about a third of the water in the tank. The water that you are adding into the aquarium must be two degrees within the temperature of the aquarium. The retailer at the pet store will guide you on the proper kind of water to be used. Some treatments allow the tap water to be ready in as little as an hour, while others need to sit overnight before being added to the tank.
You can remove the algal growths from the walls of your fish tank by using a scrubber. While cleaning, do not agitate the fish. Shuffle the rocks and other movable items in your tank to release the debris trapped in them. A siphon or a small bucket may be used to remove this debris which you can do when you are replacing the water. If you have plants inside your tank, you have to pluck out their dead leaves too. Use a squeegee soaked in clean water to clean the outer surface of the aquarium. Do not miss out on cleaning the lid and the cover of the tank. With your tank cleaning done, all you have to now do is to put everything back into its proper place and check out the delights of your fresh clean tank.
